Dr. Kristina Telhami: The Ritual I Swapped for Alcohol (and What Happened After)

Dr. Kristina Telhami: The Ritual I Swapped for Alcohol (and What Happened After)

For a long time, my version of “unwinding” looked like everyone else’s.

A drink at dinner.

Something social on the weekends.

A way to signal that the day was over.

And while I wouldn’t say alcohol was ever a problem for me - it was definitely a habit.

Not because I needed it, but because of what it represented:

Relaxation. Connection. A moment to exhale.

But at a certain point — both personally and clinically — I started looking at it differently.

Not from a place of restriction… but from a place of curiosity.

What is this actually doing for me?

When You Start Looking at It Clinically

As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I see the downstream effects of alcohol all the time.

Even in people who drink “moderately.” Yes, even me...

Things like:

  • Poor sleep quality
  • Increased anxiety the next day
  • Blood sugar instability
  • Subtle but chronic inflammation

And the irony? Most people are drinking to relax…But physiologically, it often does the opposite.

So I started experimenting with alternatives — not to eliminate the ritual, but to upgrade it.

The One I Kept Coming Back To

If you’ve never heard of kava, let me put you on to one of my newest obsessions: Kava Haven.

Kava is a plant-based extract that’s been used for centuries to promote relaxation and connection. What makes it so interesting (especially from a clinical perspective) is how it works in the body.

It interacts with GABA receptors — similar to how alcohol creates that calming effect.

But without:

  • The toxicity
  • The inflammation
  • The hangover

And that’s what initially caught my attention.

My Experience with Kava Haven

I’ll be honest — I wasn’t expecting it to replace anything for me. But the first time I tried it, I treated it like I would a cocktail. Same glass. Same ritual.

And within a short time, I noticed something different.

I felt:

  • Relaxed, but not sedated
  • Social, but completely present
  • Calm, without any mental fog

That was the shift.

Because with alcohol, there’s almost always a tradeoff.

Even one glass of wine would disrupt my sleep.

With kava, it felt like I was getting the benefit without the cost.

The Part That Actually Made It Stick

What surprised me the most wasn’t just how it made me feel — it was how easy it was to incorporate into my routine.

Because let’s be honest… part of drinking isn’t just the alcohol.

It’s the ritual.

So instead of removing that entirely, I just replaced it with something that benefited me.

My Go-To Kava Mojito 🍃

This has become my favorite way to make it feel elevated, fun, and honestly — something I look forward to.

Ingredients (for 2):

  • Fresh mint
  • Juice of 1 fresh lime
  • 1 Topo Chico (plain or flavored)
  • 2 shots of kava
  • 1 shot simple syrup

Directions:

Shake everything with ice, pour into your favorite glass, and garnish with mint + lime.

It’s refreshing, simple, and gives you that same “end of day” feeling — just without the downside.

Why I Actually Recommend This

As a doctor, I’m pretty selective about what I put in my body — and even more selective about what I recommend.

And this is where kava stands out.

Most people today are operating in a constant state of:

  • High stress
  • Overstimulation
  • Poor nervous system regulation

Kava works with your body to promote relaxation, rather than disrupting it.

Unlike alcohol, it doesn’t:

  • Interfere with sleep cycles
  • Contribute to next-day anxiety
  • Add to overall inflammatory load

And that difference matters, especially long-term.

What I Noticed After the Swap

This wasn’t an overnight, all-or-nothing change.

But over time, I found myself naturally reaching for kava more often.

And here’s what I noticed:

  • More restful, consistent sleep
  • Less anxiety the next day
  • More stable energy and mood
  • A more intentional relationship with drinking overall

It wasn’t about cutting something out.

It was about choosing something better.

If You’re Curious

If you’ve been thinking about your relationship with alcohol — or just want an option that actually supports how you feel — this is a really easy place to start.

Final Thoughts

For me, this wasn’t just about replacing alcohol.

It was about redefining what relaxation looks like.

Less escape. More presence. More intention.

And once you experience that difference — it’s hard to go back.
